Shortsleeve Slams Healey on Out-of-Control Spending

Healey’s Hiring Freeze Is A “Finger In A Dam About To Burst”

Today, Marine Corps Veteran, successful business leader, and proven government reformer Brian Shortsleeve, Republican candidate for Governor, criticized Maura Healey’s latest about face, this time on state spending.

Healey announced a long overdue hiring freeze across state government in the face of a growing budget hole resulting from Healey’s own explosive spending growth. Spending under Healey has grown nearly 20 percent from an already artificially inflated Covid-era, highly federally-subsidized baseline.

“Maura Healey is the only one to blame for a skyrocketing and unsustainable state budget,” said Shortsleeve. “Healey’s latest tax-and-spend proposal is so massive that even free-spending Beacon Hill Democrats are trying to rein her in.

“Healey’s hiring freeze is a finger in a dam about to burst,” continued Shortsleeve. “She needs to pull back her out-of-control budget and start over with a new budget that recognizes the limits to taxpayers’ ability to finance her wish list.”
