Liberty Utilities Asking for 55.5% Increase
BOSTON, MA – Today, Marine Corps Veteran, successful business leader, and proven government reformer Brian Shortsleeve, Republican candidate for governor, renewed his vow to lower energy prices.
“Plain and simple, no matter where you live in Massachusetts, ratepayers are getting crushed. The latest victims of rising costs are Liberty Utility customers who could see a 55% rate increase. We need to end the pain at the plug,” said Shortsleeve.
Tonight, the Department of Public Utilities is holding a hearing in North Attleboro regarding Liberty Utilities, a subsidiary of Canadian-based Algonquin Power & Utilities Corp., seeking approval for a massive $56 million increase in its Massachusetts gas distribution rates. If approved, residential heating customers could see their bills jump by nearly 40% this winter.
“Maura Healey’s climate agenda has caused families and seniors to choose between heating and groceries,” Shortsleeve said. “We need to make Massachusetts more affordable, and as governor, I’ll start on Day One.”
Brian Shortsleeve has spent his career in both the private and public sectors, including as a reform-minded leader at the MBTA. He is committed to fixing broken systems and restoring trust through transparency, innovation, and fiscal discipline.
