Shortsleeve Calls for Passage of Amendment to Right to Shelter Law

Oct 15, 2025

BOSTON, MA –  Today, Marine Corps Veteran, successful business leader, and proven government reformer Brian Shortsleeve, Republican candidate for governor, announced his strong support for Senate Bill 986, filed by Senator Ryan Fattman, that would ensure only legal citizens are eligible for housing assistance under the Right to Shelter law.

“This bill is about fairness, accountability, and putting our legal citizens first in line for public resources,” said Shortsleeve. “Massachusetts taxpayers should not be made to subsidize housing for individuals who are in the country illegally while veterans sleep on the streets. It’s common sense.”

Fattman’s bill is being heard by the Joint Committee on Housing today.

“Our state has spent over $3 billion to house the migrants.  This money could have been better spent on our schools, helping our seniors and veterans, and providing more local aid to our struggling municipalities.  It is time fix the Right to Shelter law,” said Shortsleeve.
