Brian Shortsleeve for Massachusetts Shortsleeve Supports Bail Reform
BOSTON, MA – Today, Marine Corps Veteran, successful business leader, and proven government reformer Brian Shortsleeve, Republican candidate for governor, issued the following statement regarding Maura Healey’s announcement on results of a street takeover enforcement push.
“Under Maura Healey, these so-called street takeovers where police officers are harassed and attacked and the public is put in danger have proliferated around the state due to her permissive approach to crime. We need real reforms to deal with the growing crime problem across Massachusetts,” said Shortsleeve. “As the next governor, I will work to implement sweeping bail reform that protects the public and stops the revolving door at our courthouses.”
Shortsleeve strongly believes that such lax bail practices embolden future criminals. He called the bail amounts granted in Boston “a national embarrassment.” As the next governor, Shortsleeve will:

End cashless bail

Institute mandatory minimum bail floors in cases involving attacks on law enforcement or arson/destruction of public property.

Require judges to justify low-bail orders publicly, including risk assessments and consideration of community safety.

Strengthen pretrial detention laws so that violent offenders can be held when they pose a serious threat, even before conviction.
