Boston, MA – For yet another year, Beacon Hill has failed to complete a state budget on time, triggering Maura Healey to file a $7.7 billion interim budget to keep the government operating. Despite having an entire year to prepare, legislative leaders once again missed the deadline, continuing a pattern of dysfunction that has become an annual tradition under one-party rule.
Republican gubernatorial candidate Brian Shortsleeve issued the following statement:
“Another fiscal year is beginning the same way the last one ended: with incompetence and irresponsibility. The legislature has twelve months to negotiate a budget, yet year after year they fail to do the most basic part of their job.
“This is exactly why people are fed up with Beacon Hill. There are no consequences for failure and no accountability for missed deadlines under Maura Healey. As governor, I will change that. If legislators refuse to do their jobs, they should not get paid. Taxpayers deserve leaders who meet deadlines, balance budgets, abide by audits, and deliver results – not excuses.”
