SHORTSLEEVE: BEACON HILL FAILED RUTLAND RESIDENTS

May 28, 2026

BOSTON, MA — Republican candidate for governor Brian Shortsleeve today reacted to the cancellation of Rutland’s planned 250th anniversary Fourth of July celebration following the defeat of a Proposition 2½ override, arguing that Beacon Hill has created the conditions forcing communities across Massachusetts into divisive override fights just to maintain basic local services and traditions.

“The people of Rutland came up with the money to privately fund this historic celebration. It was Maura Healey and Beacon Hill that failed in their obligation to properly fund cities and towns vital services so the celebration could move forward.”

“Across the Commonwealth, municipalities are being forced into impossible choices and turning to massive property tax hikes to fill growing budget gaps. But taxpayers’ ability to pay is exhausted. As governor, I’ll bring property tax relief by doubling local aid and taking the pressure of cities and towns so we can once again fly our flag high and proud, especially on the Fourth of July.”
